Title: Cladograms

Lesson Overview

From Dichotomous Keys students learned how to classify organisms by different characteristics. In this lesson they will learn Cladograms which is a diagram showing the relation of different organisms as well as common ancestors. This will be a Lab period assignment because it will take some students a bit of time.

Objectives

Students will point out the relation of different organisms as well as differences from a Cladogram.
Students will create Cladograms for 10 animals in a chosen phylum.

Materials

10 animal cards for each phylum in packages
Rulers
Gluesticks
Posterpaper
Markers
Scissors

Opening

"Yesterday we worked on Dichotomous keys, what do those Dichotomous keys tell do for biologists? Now lets take a look an a quick example from the homework. Can some on tell me the process they used to find Norm #3...#5... Pass in your homework please.(8 min)
Power point on Cladograms mentioning, What they are, What benefits they serve to Biologists, how we go about analyzing them, and what conclusions can we draw from them.

Engagement

Students in groups of 2-3 will choose a phylum of animals randomly out of a bag with packs of 10 cards. Each card will have an animal picture, name, scientific name, closest relative, and some characteristics. From these cards students will design a Cladogram. A model of a Cladogram will be laid out on the board for student's to refer to when they become lost (this will be one that I have made) This is their inquiry assignment because they need to use the facts on the cards to come up with a correct cladogram. The groups will first be asked to make a rough draft that i must approve before the posters can be made. (50-60 min)
If students finish early they will get a study guide with practice questions for the Test to work on at their desks.

Closing

Students will share their groups Cladograms and will be able to post them on the wall.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on their Cladograms but because it is their first time making one I will provide the help I need to give them to make sure it is done right, It is an easy grade for students to gain confidence 2 days before the test
